Greeting Card Designer
The primary task of a greeting card designer is to envision and create a design that complements the copy inside the card. A designer may work on a computer-based program, such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, or with artistic media such as charcoal, pen and ink or watercolors. Once the designer is finished with the design, they send it to the print shop for proofing and loading onto printers or to be made into screens for ink printing.
Skills and Abilities
Someone embarking on a career as a greeting card designer needs to have a strong background and interest in creating art. They should also have good computer skills, as most design work, even if it begins in traditional media such as pen and ink, will be input into a computer and touched up by the artist. Designers may work independently, in which case they need to be self- motivated to complete work on time. If they work as part of a larger design team, they need to have communication skills to get along with other team members.
Education and Background
Greeting card designers, as with most art professionals, are judged on the quality of their work, rather than their specific degree. The most important part of landing a job as a greeting card designer is to compile a portfolio of your work. This portfolio can be found in a physical volume or can be digital. Beyond that, the minimal educational requirement for most jobs is either a high school diploma or GED. Qualifying as a higher level greeting card designer, such as an art director, may require a higher education level degree such as a bachelor's or associate degree in design or art.
